Reported Crop Circles for the State of Iowa -

Story City, Story County (July 1972)

A flattened, ‘burned’ depression was discovered in soybeans by farmer Mervin Tieg. In the center of the circle the plants were dead, and the soil was hard and dry, but radiating outward from the center, the plants were wilted “as if subjected to an intense heat”. Extending from the circle were four lines of flattened, ‘wilted’ plants radiating outward “like spokes on a wheel” each about 35 yards long. The line heading in a northerly direction was affected the most.

At 9:30 PM the night before the circle was discovered, a “sheet of light” was seen by nearby residents which had illuminated the area. The closest neighbor though, only 250 yards from where the circle was found, reported hearing “a tremendous crash which woke me up. I didn’t see any light or anything but I felt paralyzed and couldn’t get up.” She finally managed to get up only several hours later but she said she felt “very shaky”.

The local newspaper carried a story on the circle, which generated several subsequent additional reports of similar circles in the area.

Eyewitness report only.
